World’s Biggest ‘Energy Hogs’ are Surprising
LONDON—One might expect the U.S. and Canada to be home to the biggest energy consumers in the world, but Iceland and Luxembourg surpass those seemingly obvious choices. Oilprice.com calculated the top 10 countries with the highest energy use per person and the results are surprising. The study used kilograms of oil equivalent (koe) per capita, which refers to the amount of energy that can be extracted from one kilogram of crude oil. Koe per capita can be used to compare energy from different sources, including fossil fuels and renewables. On a per-capita basis, even small countries such as Trinidad and Tobago and Brunei consume more energy than larger, more heavily populated nations. Iceland leads the list, with nearly 19,000 koe per person, more than triple that of the U.S.
